Mobile Telecom Signalling

Signalling is the “lifeblood” of the mobile industry. Few people give any thought to what “makes it all work”. After all, you can power up your mobile phone or take it off of airplane mode and, voilà, wherever you are in the world – it works! In order to make it work though, networks need to talk with each other. These sessions go into a bit more detail and are designed for those individuals wishing to gain a little more knowledge in mobile signalling.

Mobile Telecom Signalling & Generations

Here we will explore in a bit more detail what type of signalling methods are used across different mobile generations. These mobile networks and generations need to interconnect and communicate with each other. Each protocol carries unique information and this session will describe these differences


Sigtran represents an IP-based way to transport SS7 messages. It is a group of protocols that take over various functions of SS7. It also represents a different way that SS7 messages are routed

GPRS Tunnelling Protocol (GTP)

GTP is found in 2.5G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks. It is used for both signalling and carrying user data.

Signalling System 7

This overview session covers all of the basics of the Signalling System 7 (SS7) network architecture and an introduction into the layers of the protocol. We will show the purpose of the MTP, ISDN-UP (ISUP), SCCP, TCAP and the GSM MAP.


Diameter is what is known as an Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) protocol. From its humble beginnings as an upgraded and replacement AAA protocol, it has now permeated into many parts of 3GPP and non-3GPP networks. Today it is used in IMS, LTE and Policy & Charging.

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)

SIP is used in both wireline and wireless networks to set up packet-switched calls much like SS7 ISUP is used to set up circuit-switched calls.


Signalling protocols make mobile communication and roaming very effortless and seamless. However, there are basically two things that one needs to be mindful of. First of all, for the amazing ease of having it available anywhere and anytime requires a great deal of information to be passed between networks and between various network entities. The second thing is that these protocols are not inherently secure. They basically were never designed to be secure. And that leaves networks vulnerable to all sorts of intrusion and mischief.

Though each signalling protocol carries user-sensitive information, there are many unique challenges to how to recognize and how to deploy various countermeasures. Here we will examine how hackers take advantage of weaknesses and the industry’s response to signalling security.

2G/3G Sunset

The older mobile generations (2G GSM and 3G UMS) have certainly been the workhorses of mobile communication. The infrastructures and ubiquitousness that is enjoyed today is in no small part thanks to these older generations. However, these networks have limitations to what is expected today. And, they occupy a very limited and precious resource in the radio spectrum. Here we will examine various markets and what some of the projections are for retiring these older generations

5G Architecture Options

The 5G system provides the Mobile Network Operators with several deployment options. This way they can “ease” into gradual deployments. The idea is to rely on the 4G infrastructure while gradually deploying the 5G. The native 5G refers to Standalone (SA) network architecture where the 5G NR is connected directly to the 5G core. The various Non-Standalone (NSA) options refer to different scenarios where 4G and 5G radio access technologies (E-UTRA and NR, respectively) as well as the two cores.

Voice in 4G and 5G

4G and 5G networks carry data packets. To set up and transport voice packets requires some additional network enhancements. One enhancement allows the subscriber to reuse the existing and overlapping 2G or 3G network. This is called Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB). Another, more permanent solution is called Voice over LTE (VoLTE). This session will examine what is needed for each of these options.

SMS Over IP / SMS Evolution

SMS, like other services, has gone through some evolutions. From the subscribers point of view it is still typing out a message and hitting the appropriate key and the message is magically and electronically delivered. There are some deviations, like home routing. There are some other options, like SMS over SGs and SMS in LTE. And, there is SMS Over IP. Here we will look at what is needed for each of these.
